SEVEN Isle of Wight rugby players have set themselves a quite literally mountainous out-of-season challenge.

The Hurries4Change team, all with Sandown and Shanklin Rugby Club, will be tackling the notoriously tough Three Peaks Challenge later this month to raise money for a charity aimed at preventing suicide in young people.

The Islanders aim to climb Ben Nevis, in Scotland, Scafell Pike, in England’s Lake District, and Snowdon in Wales, within 24 hours sometime between May 19-20.

The team — which comprises Sam Tyson, Sam Rees, Sam Dawson, Tom Marriott, Rich Brownrigg, Ross Simpson and Will Baxandall — is taking on the challenge in aid of Papyrus.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Hurries4Change will be supported on their journey by Paul Tyson and Hurricanes coach, Andrew Steward.

They will travel up to Scotland by minibus, sponsored by The Way Forward, after crossing The Solent by club sponsors, Wightlink.

Hurricanes skipper, Sam, said: “Playing for Sandown and Shanklin has brought us all together — faced many challenges on the pitch.

“But this is a new challenge for us, so we'd like to help give back. Papyrus do really important work in preventing youth suicide — an issue on the up in the UK.”

Phil Delaney, Wightlink's commercial director, was confident the team would excel.

“I am sure these seven will do their very best to tackle this tough challenge, displaying the same teamwork and commitment as they do on the rugby field," said Phil.

"Wightlink is pleased to offer its support to this very worthwhile charity.”
