RYDE Saints' veterans team made sure the football club ended a miserable season on a high at an annual tournament in Jersey.

This year's squad, comprised of current and past Ryde Saints players and managers, returned to the Isle of Wight with pride after coming runners-up in the final.

The Islanders — who played in their third tournament in Jersey — came up against teams from the Channel Islands, but across the UK.

Saints got the tournament off to the worst possible start with a loss, but picked up their performances to win their remaining group games and qualify for the semi-final — cruising through it to face Sporting Kitz, who play in the West London Veterans Premier League, in the final.

Despite a good battle and some great chances, Saints were whittled down to one substitute, as more and more players got injured as the event progressed.

For coming second, Ryde Saints won a trophy, with David Dempster winning the golden boot for being the tournament's top scorer.

The following day, before heading home, Saints played a friendly against Wednesday Night FC, a group who play football social with a focus on improving and raising awareness for mental health.

Ryde Saints' first team are already relegated from Division 1 of the Island League after finishing bottom.
