FORMER town crier Steve King, whose favourite part of the job was telling everyone what a lovely town Ryde was, has died.

He was also a keen community volunteer for local good causes.

Facebook group,  Historic Ryde Society, posted: "Yesterday, Steve King died, our town crier and friend RIP, Steve.

"Steve was a real Ryde boy and man, gave so much to and for the town.

"Thankyou Steve. You will always be fondly remembered.

"Our deepest sympathy to his wife Edna and family."

Steve retired as town crier in December, 2021, after 12 years of service

During his time, he officially opened 13 shops and was present at 11 weddings.

He was told his services were no longer needed and stepped away from his position as Ryde town crier in April 2019, taking a temporary position as Southampton’s town crier.

Steve later became Yarmouth’s town crier, before returning to continue doing the role he loved in his hometown Ryde.

His last event was on November 24, 2021, at the Women’s Institute Centenary, hosted at Newport Minster.

Steve told the County Press that his favourite part of the job was advertising Ryde while meeting different people.

Taking part in 13 town crier competitions, his last was at Windsor Castle.

The Island's last serving town crier was John Davies, of Sandown, who died in June, 2022.
