A second swan 'savaged' in a dog attack in Freshwater has died from its injuries, the County Press has been told.

Police are investigating the incident, which saw two of the birds attacked at the Causeway on Good Friday.

One of them — a young adult swan — died almost immediately.

The other, believed to be the mother, was found in 'great difficulty' on Saturday morning (8).

Jenny Crates told the County Press: "After several hours Ingwio Vanhaecke was able to rescue her, and we took her in to Carisbrooke Vets, who were absolutely marvellous.

"They put her on a drip, and found a nasty wound on her lower back, which they cleaned thoroughly and packed out.

"She seemed initially to be doing really well, but she didn't make it through the night, and died from the trauma and injury."

The dog involved was said to be a labrador, which was let off its lead.

Jenny is pleading with dog owners, to keep their pets on their leads in the area.

The swan attack comes just days after a seperate incident which saw compensation paid to a farmer, after one of his sheep was killed in a dog attack.

That dog was also out of control, off a lead.

Police said the Freshwater incident happened at around 5.30pm.

Enquiries are ongoing to identify the dog owners and the full circumstances.
