A fire has broken out behind a fish and chip shop in Newport.

At least five fire appliances, from Newport, Ryde and Cowes are in attendance on Upper St James' Street.

Crews were alerted just after 7am, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said.

The road has been shut while the fire is tackled.

The County Press has been told it broke out in an outbuilding to the rear of Stotesbury's, near Geoff Leather funeral directors.

Ambulance and police are also at the scene.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has said when crews first arrived, smoke was issuing from the ground-floor of the building. 

Wearing breathing apparatus firefighters extinguished the blaze at the rear of the property, using hose reel jets before clearing the smoke with ventilation fans.

Crews remained on the scene to dampen down and deliver community safety materials to neighbouring addresses. 

The stop message came in at 7.38am.

The road has reopened.
