A CROSS-Channel ferry due to take passengers from Dover to Calais, has been forced to anchor off Sandown Bay amid crippling delays at the major Kent port.

A backlog in ferry services to France, caused by a combination of long border processing times, disruption to some journeys due to bad weather and a high volume of Easter holidaymakers, has led to the snarl up.

The P&O ferry, Pioneer — the latest addition to their fleet — is due to serve the Dover-Calais route.

A highly unusual sight off the Isle of Wight, the ship is believed to be the worlds largest double-ended ferry and the first of its kind to be deployed on English Channel services.

The double-ended design means that the ship does not need to turn 180 degrees in port, as is the case with all previous Dover–Calais ferries, to saves both time and fuel.
