A TRIO of Vectis Rugby Club's young sides enjoyed not only some Irish-style hospitality at one of the country's top clubs, they even enjoyed the luck of the Irish.

The U7s, U9s and U10s were invited to compete in the annual St Patrick’s Party event, hosted by English Premiership club, London Irish.

Starting with a round-robin minis festival at Gunnersby Park, a St Patrick’s Day festival of Irish music, a pint or two of Guinness for the parents and seats to watch the London Irish v Northampton Saints match made for a great day out.

Vectis U7s claimed an impressive clean sweep of five victories against some big clubs, which included a 7-2 win over the London Irish side — leaving behind a very proud group of coaches and supporters, and some stunned opposition.

It was no easier a task for the U9s, with the likes of Barnes RFC and strong Hampshire clubs in Alton, Romsey and Winchester — but they did notch up two great wins.

The Vectis U10s came up against Bracknell, as well as the fearsome Weybridge, Droitwich and Streatham.

The highlight was another big win against London Irish.

After the festival, the Vectis teams headed over to the Gtec Community Stadium, the home of London Irish, to take part in a parade around the pitch — waving St Patrick’s Day flags and helping to create an incredible spectacle before kick-off.

London Irish beat Northampton and stayed on afterwards to sign flags and rugby balls for the Vectis youngsters.

Vectis RFC secretary, David Stanford, said: "All three teams showed great effort and sportsmanship in all the games — a real credit to Vectis.

"They've made huge progress since September — and giving the coaches some really good learning points in the final month of the season.

"Vectis are keen to offer Island children the opportunity to play rugby and experience the game at the highest level."
