An 'underweight' swan which ventured into the road and was unable to fly has been rescued by charity workers on the Isle of Wight.

Friends of the Animals received a call about the bird, after it was spotted looking worse for wear in Carisbrooke.

Two workers from the charity, Chris and Helen, attended the junction of Whitcombe Road and Nunnery Lane, near the car park.

A spokesperson told the County Press: "We were informed that the swan was actually in the road, when we arrived it was on the grass verge next to the road but went back into the road and was unable to fly."

Using a sheet, the workers were able to capture the swan and transport it back to their Newport base, on Riverway.

Upon inspection, it was deemed to be underweight.

It stayed there at the shop until local man Edward Albert, who looks after animals, came to collect the bird.

It was being cared for by him as of Thursday, March 23.
