With the UK’s 13th lowest crime rate, the research claims that Islanders reported feeling safe walking home at night and having little worry about being mugged.

To reach this conclusion, researchers looked at factors such as the number of pedestrian accidents involving vehicles and crime rates, normalised against each area’s population – which for the Island, was just over 140,000 as of December 5, 2022.

Researchers also looked at safety concerns pedestrians may have, such as being mugged, how safe they feel walking alone at night and worries of being attacked, to understand which places in the UK are safest for the average population.

What does the research say about pedestrian safety on the Isle of Wight?

The research claims that 65 per cent of Islanders feel safe walking alone at night, with just 21 per cent worried about being mugged/robbed.

Just over 30 per cent of Island residents are worried about being attacked, with 28 per cent concerned about being targeted due to their skin colour, ethnicity, gender or religion.

The Island’s crime rate stands at 673 per 10,000 people, and pedestrian accidents are at just 337 per 100,000 people.

Bollards Direct gave the Island a pedestrian safety score of 7.82 out of 10, placing it joint-tenth with Rotherham.
