A MAN has been arrested by police in Sandown this afternoon (Thursday, March 23) after fears he may have a firearm. 

Police were called at 1.20pm following a report of a man with a firearm, with armed officers arriving at an address on Sandown High Street shortly after.

A 44-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear, alarm or distress.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said he remains in custody.

No firearm has been recovered.
