AN ISLE of Wight drink driver more than four times over the limit was caught after doing 'burnouts' and 'doughnuts' in the Hare and Hounds car park and going on to crash into a hedge.

Trevor Pearce, of The Duver, St Helens, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday (March 14).

The 58-year-old admitted drink driving in Newport, and possession of cannabis, on February 25.

Prosecutor, Ann Smout, told the court police had been alerted to an incident outside the Hare and Hounds by a member of staff.

They were told a car was doing 'burnouts' and 'doughnuts' in the car park, and crashed into a hedge outside the pub.

When officers arrived, Peace was identified as the driver.

He was described as smelling of alcohol and being very unsteady on his feet.

The court heard a bottle of vodka was found in his car, and 80 per cent of its contents had been consumed.

He registered a breath-alcohol reading of 142 when the legal limit is 35.

Barry Arnett, defending, said there was no suggestion Pearce had consumed 80 per cent of the vodka on the day.

He said Pearce had a lot of issues, including depression and an industrial injury, and asked for a pre-sentence report to be drawn up.

Pearce saw his case adjourned to April 14 and was made subject of an interim driving ban.

He was granted unconditional bail until that date.
