The Isle of Wight County Press competition has taken a poignant twist this year with the nomination of Franki's Salon in East Cowes, whose owner Franki Phillips died suddenly on New Year's Day

At the time, the salon paid tribute on social media, saying: "There are no words to describe the loss we feel, she was the loveliest soul and her radiance will forever stay with us.

"Our hearts are breaking. Nothing can ever fill the hole she has left in our lives. We know so many of you will feel the same.

"For most of you she was more than just your hairdresser, she was a friend.

"The positive, outgoing and welcoming salon that she has created over these 13 years will forever be unmatched."

Franki's Salon has now joined nine other Isle of Wight salons in vying for the coveted title.

Franki's husband, Darren Phillips, told the County Press this week: "To have the salon involved in this competition is a very proud moment for me.

"Franki spent 13 years building a business that had the most welcoming and warmest of environments. A place where her clients were happy to be.

"Franki's skill and talent spoke for itself, and with her years of experience giving the salon the highly regarded reputation it had.

"We are all so grateful to everyone who voted for FHS to get us this far. If we were to win, it would be an incredible way to honour Franki and Franki's hair salon."
