AN ISLE of Wight woman was caught with a kitchen knife in her handbag after making a nuisance of herself at a bus station.

Freya Jones, of Hillcrest Road, Rookley, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old admitted possession of a knife in a public place, and using threatening, abusive or insulting words/behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, in Newport, on February 4.

Prosecutor, Ann Smout, told the court police had been called to reports of a female screaming at Church Litten bus stop at approximately 9.50am.

Officers attended, and found Jones, who appeared under the influence, making a nuisance of herself.

Ms Smout said she referred to members of the public as paedophiles and refused to leave the area.

The court heard elderly members of the public and children were present, and as a result, Jones was arrested.

During a search of her handbag, officers found a black-handled kitchen knife.

Ms Smout said Jones had previous convictions; the last for battery in December, 2017, but none of a like nature.

She said the knife had not been used or produced.

Jones saw her case adjourned to March 31 so a pre-sentence report could be drawn up.

She was granted unconditional bail.
