To mark the one year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian national flag was raised at County Hall today.

The poignant moment of reflection was attended by several Ukrainians who have made the Island their home since the start of the conflict.

The national flag of Ukraine now flies proudly alongside the Union Flag in a symbolic gesture of support for the people of Ukraine.

Cllr Chris Jarman, who welcomed two Ukrainian families into his home, said the commemoration was an opportunity to pay tribute to the courage of the Ukrainian people. 

He said: “Raising the flag is our way of showing solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

“It's important that we stand together with those affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

"By raising the Ukrainian flag, we are sending a clear message of support, especially to those Ukrainians who have chosen to make our Island their home in the past year.

"My thanks go to all those local families who have opened their doors and their hearts to our Ukrainian guests over the past 12 months, providing shelter, support and a home in their darkest hours.

"Thanks too to our voluntary sector partners, in particular Community Action Isle of Wight, which has been instrumental in welcoming and supporting Ukrainians in their relocation to the Isle of Wight.”

One of the Ukrainian guests said: “We thank your country and your Island for the love and support shown. Each and every Ukrainian is very overwhelmed and grateful."
