A LARGE cargo ship is stranded in the mouth of Southampton Water after breaking down earlier this afternoon (Thursday, January 26).

A recovery operation is well underway to assist the 400m long MOL Treasure, with four tugboats surrounding the vessel.

It has broken down between Fawley refinery and Hamble point, a narrow strait near the mouth of the tidal estuary.

The Solent Ships YouTube channel is broadcasting a live feed of the incident.

A spokesperson from the Port of Southampton said: "ABP Southampton is assisting the MOL Treasure as it investigates an operational issue.

"Our assistance has included despatching four tugs to ensure that the vessel is held in a position of safety.

"We continue to liaise closely with the MOL Treasure as it carries out checks.

"Our port activity is continuing largely as normal while these investigations take place and safety of course remains our paramount focus."
