Newport is set to lose its last LloydsPharmacy, as an independent chain looks to take over.

The Isle of Wight County Press has been told the Pyle Street branch is to undergo a 'change of ownership'.

It's understood Day Lewis Pharmacy, which also has pharmacies at the top of Newport High Street and in Carisbrooke, is planning on moving into the building.

It follows a decision made earlier this month, to close the LloydsPharmacy branch at Newport's Sainsbury's store.

An announcement confirmed all of the 237 pharmacy sites within the UK supermarket will be axed.

A decision was made following a strategic review “in response to changing market conditions”.

The County Press understands it is unlikely jobs at the Pyle Street branch will be affected by the change.

It would mean LloydsPharmacy would only have two branches on the Island — in Ryde and East Cowes.

While Day Lewis has pharmacies in Cowes, Lake, Shanklin, Niton and Wootton.

Lloyds Pharmacy said it 'regularly reviews' its pharmacy estate and any decision to sell stores is taken in the interests of patients, colleagues and the business.

A spokesperson said: “At all times, patient safety remains our top priority ensuring that our customers and patients are always able to access vital prescriptions, health advice, products and services.”

The Isle of Wight County Press has contacted Day Lewis Pharmacy for comment.
