The next Jacques Villeneuve or Lewis Hamilton could come from an Isle of Wight primary school.

Two teams from Gurnard Primary School travelled to Birmingham for the F1 in Schools National Final...and both came home with trophies.

Over the past few years, the school has taken part in the Jaguar Challenge and, this year, the F1 in Schools event, which is approved by the sport's governing body.

This year, the qualifying teams from the Gurnard school, the Venomous Vipers and Vortex, took to the stage at the National Exhibition Centre on finals day to pick up category prizes.

The Venomous Vipers were Barnaby, Luke, Finlay and Kes.

Vortex were Emily, Elsie, Cassius, Fallon and Barnaby.

Richard Berryman, from Gurnard, said the teams had worked hard over the past few weeks to prepare cars, presentations, portfolios and pit displays for judging; working after school and at home to ensure that their projects were the best that they could be.

Richard told the Isle of Wight County Press: "The national finals are the culmination of three stages of racing: an in-school event for all children in Year 5; a regional final for the South and a UK national final.

"We are really proud to say both teams achieved recognition, with Venomous Vipers receiving the Best Presentation trophy and Vortex picking up the Research and Development award.

"This was no mean feat, as they were up against 24 teams from across the UK, representing the best that each region had to offer.

"It was a fantastic day, and the children showed a real passion for the project throughout.

"They spoke confidently and enthusiastically about all areas of their designs and demonstrated exceptional teamwork. We are so proud of their efforts and are sure that this is something that they will remember for a very long time.
