A MAN went on the rampage at St Mary's Hospital, and managed to rip a secure door worth £2,000 off its hinges.

Drew Whittaker also broke a fan, a phone and a chair, threw a patient's lunch around and tipped over a games table, overnight from September 24 to 25.

Last Friday, Whittaker, 19, of Carisbrooke Road, was sentenced at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

He was also sentenced for racially aggravated harassment, at a kebab shop in Newport, on May 19.

He had previously denied there was any racist element to his behaviour but since changed his plea to admit using phrases including "F*** off back to your own country" to a staff member.

He changed his plea on the day of his trial.

Henry Farley, representing Whittaker, said his client had experienced mental health problems and went to St Mary's voluntarily after being told he would be sectioned if he didn't volunteer.

He said the medication he was given had made him "feel peculiar", and accepted he had carried out the criminal damage.

Mr Farley said: "The damage was to a security door in a secure unit, which if it was able to be pulled off its hinges is of some concern."

He told magistrates Whittaker's background included being removed from his family at ten years old and all the unresolved trauma that went with that.

He has support in place until he is 25.

Magistrates said Whittaker was "very close" to going into custody but due to his difficult background they were prepared to give him a "last chance".

He was handed a two-year community order to include 20 rehabilitation days and a thinking skills course.

He must complete 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £500 compensation towards the cost of replacing the door.
