Popular Isle of Wight dessert shop Sweet Charlie's has announced its sudden closure.

The cafe, on Newport High Street, has said it hopes the closure is only temporary.

It comes just days after a fundraiser was launched due to 'increasing bills, cost of supplies and the impact of Covid'.

The cafe was hoping to raise £35,000 in a bid to secure its future. So far £1,556 has been donated.

Isle of Wight County Press:

A statement from the cafe, posted today (Tuesday), said it will shut as of now, while the business and its financial position is 'revaluated'.

On Facebook, the statement reads: "We are trying to contact all bookings, so please contact us if we haven’t managed to get hold of you personally.

Isle of Wight County Press:

"It’s been a truly hard decision to make but it has to be done.

"Thanks to everybody for your support and we hope we have brought lots of happiness and smiles to many of you over the time that we’ve been open."

It remains unclear whether gift vouchers will be honoured.
