Isle of Wight members of the NEU teaching union will walk out in a strike over pay, alongside their colleagues from around the country.

Wednesday, February 1 is scheduled as the first day of strike action.

In total, the NEU says will it will impact 23,400 schools across England and Wales, including those on the Island.

The four projected strike days for Isle of Wight teachers are:

  • Wednesday, February 1 2023
  • Thursday, March 2 2023
  • Wednesday, March 15 2023
  • Thursday, March 16 2023

How many teachers supported NEU action?

In England, 53.27 per cent of NEU teachers took part in the vote and 90.44 per cent supported action.

A ballot result of support staff in schools in England saw under half take part (46.4 per cent), of whom 84.13 per cent supported a walk out - which means they will not be taking action.

Across the country, seven days of action will take place in February and March and any single school will be hit by four of those seven days.

Teachers in sixth form colleges will also take action, in a separate but linked dispute.

The NEU says it wants a fully-funded, above-inflation pay rise.

Isle of Wight-based Peter Shreeve, Assistant District Secretary of the National Education Union, said: "It’s with a heavy heart that members have chosen to act.

"They have chosen to do so, because the government doesn’t appear willing to act or genuinely consult.

"Government has known about staff shortages and its impact on workload for years.

"Closing this gap will not be a quick fix, but it’s not too late for positive discussion."

Mr Shreeve says the NEU will meet with a government representative for talks.
