The sounds of the pipes and drums are more readily associated with Scotland than the Isle of Wight...but that is changing.

The sound of the bagpipes is becoming more familiar on the Island thanks to events such as the Island Highland Gathering and the unmistakeable Wight Hot Pipes.

Now the Island has its own band, which is growing rapidly.

The Isle of Wight Highland Pipes and Drums was formed in the latter part of 2018 and is the Island's first pipe band.

Craig Eccleston-Todd, form the band, said the band now has almost 30 members at various stages. with both accomplished pipers and learners, both on pipes and drums.

He said: "We have members from the age of 11 through to 70.

"It is vital we put the time into the younger members to ensure the future of the band in years to come.

"We are seeing now that the IW Highland Pipes and Drums is growing to be a popular feature of local events showcasing some of the traditional music of Scotland that is enjoyed around the globe.

Craig added that the band had become part of many charity events.

This included playing alongside Medina Marching Band at the Festival of Remembrance, raising money for the Royal British Legion and  playing with the Wight Hot Pipes for their fundraising efforts for ASPIRE in Ryde.

This past Remembrance Sunday the band led the procession for Cowes Royal British Legion.

Craig said: "We have bookings coming in for this year's carnivals and the Island Highland Gathering.

"We are hoping to do some more fetes and village shows this year too so if any organisations would like us to come along then please get in touch.

"We are currently discussing joining the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, allowing the band to compete against other pipe bands nationwide and really put the band on the map."

The band is currently looking for any experienced pipers that may have slipped through the net who live on the island and perhaps hadn't heard of them yet.
