AN ISLE of Wight drink-driver crashed into some trees after leaving the house to find his mobile phone.

Martin Kirwood-Slack, of Sydney Close, Newport, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Friday (January 6).

The 42-year-old admitted drink-driving in Newport, on December 16, 2022.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court police officers had been dispatched at 1.10am following reports of a vehicle crashing on a bend at Noke Common.

She said hazard lights were flashing, and when police located the yellow Ford Transit, Kirwood-Slack was standing by his vehicle.

The court heard Kirwood-Slack suffered a minor injury to one of his fingers and told officers he had been stupid.

He was breathalysed, and registered a breath-alcohol reading of 69 when the legal limit is 35.

Ms Miller said CCTV covered some of the incident, and Kirwood-Slack had crashed into some trees.

Amy Hosell, defending, said Kirwood-Slack had been out drinking with friends and colleagues in Southampton, and a friend had driven him home.

She said he realised he didn’t have his phone, and decided to drive his van to pick it up.

Ms Hosell said it had been very icy on the roads on the day in question, and that was the reason for the collision.

The self-employed electrician and father-of-two was fined £633 with costs of £85 and a £253 surcharge.

He was disqualified from driving for 18 months.
