A NEW ‘Dark Skies Festival’ is coming to the Isle of Wight next month, celebrating the Island’s dark skies and supporting a bid to become an ‘International Dark Skies Park’.

Created by The New Carnival Company, the festival will feature astronomy, nocturnal wildlife and insects, photography, science, art, heritage and culture.

Talks, interactive activities and installations will aim to engage and inspire Islanders young and old.

The event will be held at Isle of Wight Pearl on Military Road in Brighstone.

A New Carnival spokesperson said: “The Isle of Wight has incredible, unique dark skies along the south west coast. Only one per cent of land in the south east of England still has a natural dark sky.

“Come along, find out why dark skies are important and how they help our health and wellbeing.”

The event, taking place on February 17 and 18 from 3pm – 8pm, is funded by the IOW Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as part of its work with the European Union Interreg Project.

More details on the festival will be available soon on the New Carnival Facebook page.
