Ryde's lifeboat team has slammed 'mindless vandals' who damaged a vital emergency phone.

The broken equipment has been found outside Ryde Inshore Rescue's base at Appley today (Monday, January 2).

It is used to report an emergency from the Ryde seafront location and links straight to 999.

However, the phone has been completely smashed to pieces, prompting an angry reaction from the Isle of Wight's lifesavers.

Ryde Inshore Rescue tweeted: "Nice way to start the New Year.

"The emergency phone outside our station is currently out of order.

"We would like to thank the mindless vandals for their work.

"We will endeavour to have it back in use as soon as possible."
