You know it's Christmas on the Isle of Wight when battered Brussels sprouts are cooking in Cowes.

This year, foot-long pigs in blankets and battered mince pies are joining them on the heat racks, at Corries Cabin fish and chip shop.

The treats have become a sizzling seasonal staple for the discerning Islander.

The Brussels sprouts are the most popular, according to Corries Cabin's Tammy Pierce. however her personal favourites are the stuffing fritters.

She told the Isle of Wight County Press: "When I first started working here, I didn't think the sprouts would be so popular, but customers ask for them all year round!"

The battered festive favourites appear on the Corrie's Cabin's menu from December 1 and they are served up until New Year's Eve.

"The foot-long battered sausage is pretty close behind in the popularity stakes," said owner, Richard Quigley.

"I think people see it as a challenge.

"We started the sprouts about 15 years ago.

"There's a lady that lives in Cowes who started asking about them in July!"
