A CHEF who was almost three times the drink-drive limit when he collided with a neighbour's car after watching an England World Cup match, was shopped to police by his own principled father, an Isle of Wight court was told.

Benjamin Burnett admitted drink-driving during the early hours of November 22.

The 21-year-old collided with a neighbour's parked car, causing minor damage, but it only came to the police's attention after his father informed them about it.

When officers arrived at his home, Burnett, of The Finches, Carisbrooke, initially told them he had not drunk anything, said Ann Smout, prosecuting, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

He blew an alcohol reading of 97 microgrammes. The legal limit is 35.

Burnett, with no previous convictions, later told police he drank a lot of lager — which he later estimated to be eight pints — at the Hogshead pub that evening while watching the World Cup match between England and Iran.

He said he initially had no intention to drive, but after a takeaway he felt fine to drive, rather than walk home.

For Burnett, Henry Farley said: "He admits he deserves to be disqualified from driving and blames no one but himself. He is full of remorse."

"He is diagnosed as autistic and has ADHD, so social events frighten him to the point it leaves him quivering. Drink helps him."

Burnett was banned from driving for 25 months and handed a year's probation, with 80 hours' unpaid work, £85 costs and a £114 surcharge.
