The Isle of Wight's full-size floodlit 3rd generation (3G) pitch is closed for repairs until further notice, users have been told.

Groups who usually hire the facility, in the grounds of Cowes Enterprise College, have been informed a decision was made on health and safety grounds.

Fees for those affected by cancellations to bookings will be refunded, the announcement said.

The pitch costs up to £100 per hour to hire.

Managers of the site added: "We will be in touch with a date of re-opening. Sorry for any inconvenience caused."

Work started in 2019 to create the Isle of Wight's first state-of-the-art artificial grass football pitch, with costs standing at around £1 million.

The project was made possible through funding from the Isle of Wight Council, the Premier League, the FA and the Football Foundation charity.

Birmingham-based Ormiston Academies Trust, which runs Cowes Enterprise College, also backed the project.
