AN ISLE of Wight rugby club has paid tribute to a beloved former player and supporter.

Ventnor Rugby Club shared the news that former player, Bill Gee, had died.

Bill Gee’s days at Ventnor Rugby Club began in the 1980s when he played and enjoyed several rugby tours to France.

After retiring from play, he continued as a staunch club supporter who was well known to players, both old and new.

“He was also one of nicest guys you could ever wish to meet,” said a spokesperson for the club.

“Bill was a dedicated committee man, and a constant supporter of the club.

“He will be sorely missed by the club and the community.

“We send our best wishes and love to Bill’s family, and his vast circle of friends.”

Mr Gee was born on December 15, 1949, in Ventnor, as the son of William and Mary Gee.

His father owned the local nurseries in Springhill.

Upon leaving school, he completed a bricklaying apprenticeship with Carpenters’ Builders, of Shanklin.

In 1968, he married Christine, and the couple had two children together — Simon and Katie.

Then, in the early ‘70s, he trained as a fireman — a career which he pursued until 2008.

Mr Gee later returned to the building trade, often working with his brother and nephews.

He was a Ventnor boy through and through, and while he travelled extensively, he was always pleased to return home.

A stalwart of Ventnor Rugby Club, avid supporter of Manchester United, and a keen gardener, he leaves behind his two children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
