A woman got drunk and refused to move from the centre reservation of Newport's dual carriageway late at night, a court heard.

Ria Lockwood, 19, of Ash Road, Newport, admitted being drunk and disorderly in public on November 10, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said police were flagged down by a concerned member of the public at 10.15pm.

They were told someone was sitting in the centre of the dual carriageway.

A friend of Lockwood said she was drunk and refusing to move.

She moved when police asked but declined all options offered, of being taken home or to hospital, and said she liked sitting in the centre reservation.

She tried to go back to the centre reservation but for her own safety was told she couldn't, and had to be restrained on the first lane of the carriageway by police.

Representing herself, Lockwood said her mental health had not been in a good place at the time and she would have complied otherwise.

She said she was getting help, and this was confirmed by the probation service, who said she had ADHD and other issues and was well supported.

Presiding magistrate Andre Usborne said they wanted to make sure her behaviour didn't escalate.

Lockwood was fined £40, with £85 costs and a £16 surcharge.
