YET another flood alert has been issued on the Isle of Wight today (Tuesday, November 22), as the water level in the Eastern Yar remains high.

Since yesterday (Monday), only 1mm has been recorded at Wroxall, and at Alverstone, the river is falling at a rate of 2cm per hour.

Leftover flood impacts will affect roads, cycle tracks and footpaths in the Upper Yar Valley.

At Sandown, the river is just beginning to peak and will start to fall later this afternoon.

Minor flooding will affect Gold Links Road and Morton Common, with ditches around Fort Holiday Park struggling to drain while river levels are high.

For the rest of today, the weather should be mostly dry, allowing the river a chance to recover.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday, up to 20mm of rain is forecast, which the Environment Agency says might see the river’s water level begin to rise again.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: “We continue to monitor the forecast and will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages.

“Please ensure any products used to protect gardens and property from flooding are operating.”

The flood alert will be updated at midday tomorrow.
