An Environment Agency flood alert has been issued for the Eastern Yar on the Isle of Wight.

The organisation said there has been 30mm of rain in the Knighton, so far, which it has called a significant amount in a short time.

It said: "Water levels in the Eastern Yar are high and rising.

"From 11am, water will be ponded on low lying land adjacent to the river throughout the river valley. At Langbridge and Alverstone, the river will be close to the top of the riverbank."

While property flooding is not expected, roads are expected to be affected by water.

At 8pm tonight (Thursday), this is expected to get worse.

At Alverstone, the river will continue to rise until about 2pm.

At Sandown, levels will peak tomorrow (Friday) morning.

The Environment Agency added: "Neap tides are expected over the next two days, and the river will have little opportunity to drain to sea.

"We continue to monitor the forecast and will ensure the river remains free of reported blockages.

"Please ensure products used to protect gardens and property from flooding are operating."

An update is due at 7pm.
