THE Isle of Wight’s Lord-Lieutenant planted a tree alongside Island brownies in Newport today (Tuesday) as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) initiative.

A Silver Birch, one of 350 that made the Tree of Trees statue outside Buckingham Palace in the jubilee celebrations, was planted at Pan Meadows Country Park.

The tree was illuminated on June 2 as the first in the chain of 1,500 beacons lit across the UK and Commonwealth for the last weekend of platinum jubilee celebrations.

Island Lord-Lieutenant Susie Sheldon planted the tree with the help of 11 Brownies from Tenth Newport, who also planted trees of their own at Pan Meadows.

The special planter, that came with the tree, has been donated to the Isle of Wight Council and was collected by Lee Matthews, IW Council’s strategic manager for recreation and public spaces.

A wooden bear sculpture, designed by Paul Sivell, has been placed near the planting spot, and children at Barton Primary School are being encouraged to write a story and name the bear.

Extended to the end of March 2023, the QGC initiative was originally a celebration of the Queen’s platinum jubilee but is now giving people the opportunity to plant trees in memoriam to honour Her Majesty.

Across the Island, many trees have already been planted as part of the QGC.

The initiative is still running, and anyone thinking of planting a tree, shrub or hedge is encouraged to do so between now and March and then pin it on the interactive map on the QGC website, making your mark on history and the Queen’s jubilee celebrations.

Next month, the second of the 350 jubilee trees given to the Island will be planted at Isle of Wight College.

If you would like any help with your tree planting or are planning any large planting project and would like to dedicate it to the Queen’s Green Canopy, organisers would like to hear from you.
