WORK on Sandown’s latest toilet project aims to be completed by Christmas, with a new toilet block, including full accessible loos and showers.

The project at Eastern Gardens, just off the Esplanade, started with the removal of the railings and other preparation work before the new toilet block is installed.

Following the works at St John’s, the project will introduce coin and card-operated public toilets, with full accessibility and baby-changing facilities.

With this project costing over £200,000, local councillors are in the process of consulting on next year’s budget, including the possible reprovision of further public conveniences in the town.

Cllr Alex Lightfoot, Sandown deputy town mayor, said: “Following extensive public consultation and securing planning and consents from the local authority, the contractors are on site, with the work likely to be completed well before Christmas.

“We are grateful for Green Town Volunteers for their help relocating plants, and we hope to use the planters in a new project in 2023 when this major project has been completed and opened to the public.”
