THE Apollo Theatre in Newport marked its 50th anniversary in style with a gala evening last Friday (September 23).

The event was attended by members and actors past and present, including Barbara Forer, who was part of the cast of the Apollo’s first official show, Hotel Paradiso, in 1972.

There was fizz and canapes, as well as entertainment including songs from the shows, performed by Anthea Weekes, who sang from such varied performances as Guys and Dolls; The Boy Friend; Fiddler On The Roof; By George, it's Gerschwin and The Selki Wife. 

There was also a scene from Hotel Paradiso, which was read by Fiona and Paul Gwinnett, Ian Moth and Carole Crow.

The evening was compered by Amy Burns and also included a speech by the theatre’s artistic director, Helen Reading.

The event was due to be held earlier in September, to coincide with the anniversary of the opening of Hotel Paradiso, but was put back as a mark of respect, following the death of the Queen.
