A touch of French style on two wheels was the winning entry at the Isle of Wight Vintage Motorcycle Club's September Scurry.

Cardiff collector Bill Phelps's stunning cream and brown leather 1952 Peugeot CL55 was judged top entry of more than 50 classic machines on show in St Thomas's Square, Newport, on Saturday.

Bill, who has more than 50 motorbikes, dating back to 1902, has among his collection a 1950s Triumph sidecar that appears in the opening credits of BBC's Antiques Roadshow.

Judges Gerald Davison, a former Honda UK executive, and County Press editor Alan Marriott chose Bill's Peugeot due to its stylish looks and compact 125cc engine.Isle of Wight County Press: NewsquestNewsquest (Image: Newsquest)

Gerald said "It was such a tough call to pick a winner. We found so many gems dating ack over almost 100 years of biking.

After presenting the County Press Cup, Alan said: "What a joy to see so many lovely bikes. There was even a 1970s Yamaha that was the model I had as a teenager."

Bill said he had bought his Peugeot from a Belgian collector friend almost 20 years ago and had resorted it.

"It's a bottom of the range 125CC bike with girder forks and hand-change gears...so it is pretty basic."

Ron Wallis, one of the organisers, said more than £100 was raised for Young Lives vs Cancer.
