Expect temporary traffic lights and possible disruption on Fairlee Road - a major route into the Isle of Wight's main town of Newport - for up to 12 weeks, from today (Tuesday, September 20).

Southern Water was expected to start work yesterday (Monday), to replace an ageing water main but, instead, it was designated a bank holiday for the Queen's funeral.

Pipe will be replaced along the road that passes Seaclose Park, 1Leisure and Medina College and theatre, over six weeks, just a fortnight after children returned to school following their summer break.

There will also be three nights of closure, when work reaches the turning to the school, theatre and leisure centre, however this is expected only to affect the school and liesure centre site itself.

Meanwhile, a sign on Fairlee Road today (Tuesday), warns that will be between 7.30pm and 6am, from Monday, September 26.

This is for work just announced by Island Roads, to be carried out over five nights and requiring a road closure and diversion.

Other work along the road will last up to three months and will be carried out during the day.

A Southern Water spokesperson has apologised for the traffic disruption the work will cause.

Island Roads says it will monitor the water company's progress and address issues that may arise.

Residents have been told water supplies will not be affected and driveway access will be maintained at all times.

Meanwhile, Island Roads is due to start three weeks safety works today, at a host of Isle of Wight locations.

Work will be done at night under either a road closure or with temporary traffic lights in operation.
