Liz Truss was today elected as leader of the Conservative Party and will become the country's third female Prime Minister after she goes to see the Queen at Balmoral.

The leadership election result announced this lunchtime gave her 81,326 votes against 60,399 votes for her opponent Rishi Sunak.

Last month, both candidates visited the Isle of Wight, meeting Island Tory members.

Liz Truss visited the Island Riding Centre and Wight Shipyard, where she had her picture taken in front of the iconic Union Flag doors.

She declined to answer questions from Island journalists but met with business leaders from Wight Shipyard.

Conservative Isle of Wight Councillor Ian Ward said on his Facebook page: "Island Conservative Party members had the opportunity to listen to what plans Liz Truss was going to implement should she be elected as Party Leader and thus Prime Minister.

"I was pleased she said that she would reduce fuel and green taxes. Members asked her many questions about; the cost of living, planning policy, adult social care, education, ferries, the Island Deal, levelling up etc."
