"IT COULD have killed us."

Two holidaymakers have spoken of their horror when youths threw a large spirit bottle over the edge of Lake cliff — and it smashed at their feet.

Mrs Hall, 54, was out walking with her mother Mrs Dobinson, 77, on holiday from Winchester, when the incident happened.

Mrs Hall told the County Press: "Urgent action must be taken to stop a fatality occurring.

"Pensioners and families walk along that path all day and on an evening and they may not be as lucky as us to have had a narrow escape.

"This was such a distressing end to our holiday and not what we expected from the Island.

"I understand it's a minority but this has to be stopped. A police officer is needed in this area to control these morons before a life is lost."

The holidaymakers were halfway between Shanklin and Lake, on a walk from Sandown, when a large glass bottle, described as the size of a bottle of spirit, came "crashing down just in front of our feet with an almighty bang and smashed".

Mrs Hall said: "We screamed and held each other as we were both in shock.

"A very kind lady stopped on her bike as she was cycling to Sandown and said she had seen what had happened and asked if we were ok.

"We walked on to Shanklin watching all of the time in case they threw another bottle at us.

"We warned three families and a young lad as they were about to walk along.

"We then drove around Shanklin trying to find a police officer but there was none around and the police station was no longer in use.

"If the bottle had hit one if us, it would have killed us. We are very shaken, disillusioned and upset holidaymakers."

They said they wanted to raise awareness to alert others.

Mrs Hall added: "We have holidayed on the Island for the last 46 years and never experienced anything like this before."
