A BABY Seal 'harassed' by members of the public on Yaverland beach yesterday (Saturday) has been humanely euthanised.

The tragic update comes from British Divers Marine Life Rescue, which is dedicated to the rescue of marine life.

The organisation said the incident on Yaverland beach resulted in a very malnourished and exhausted common seal pup being harassed for several hours as it tried to rest, and scared back into the sea on multiple occasions.

"Witness reports to our emergency helpline from the public and other Island organisations alerted us to the seal pup," said a spokesperson for the organisation.

"Trained marine mammal medics were sent out to the scene.

Isle of Wight County Press:

"On quiet observation, and once the beach was clear, the decision was made to catch up the seal as it was very thin and exhibited signs of illness.

"After an initial assessment on the beach, he was transported to the local vets.

"On arrival, the seal was dehydrated and in very poor condition.

"The seal pup also had severe mouth rot, and would not have survived, or been able to be re-released back to the wild.

"Sadly, the seal had to be humanely euthanised.

Isle of Wight County Press:

"Wild animals need to be given space and respect — especially if you think a marine mammal is in distress, or in a location that may put it in harm's way.

"Please call our national 24-hour number 01825 765546 so that we can attend to them as soon as possible.

"This is a National number, and the co-ordinator will dispatch trained marine mammal medics locally from the Island.

"Please do not approach the animal or try to help them back into the water, as you could be doing more harm than good for the welfare and health of that animal.

"Thank you to those who called in to report the seal, and helped keep people and the seal at a safe distance."
