A MAN lost his accommodation at a pub when he got charged with drink driving.

Marcus Waters, 51, lived above the White Horse Inn in Whitwell when he was involved in a car accident.

At the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday, Waters admitted drink driving on Whitwell Road, Ventnor, on July 13.

Two vehicles were involved in a collision at a pinch-point, with the other car rolling over.

Waters waited with the elderly occupants of the other car for half an hour to check they were OK, then drove his Citroen Berlingo home.

It had suffered a flat tyre but he was concerned it was in a dangerous spot on the road if he remained there, said Liz Miller, prosecuting.

When he got home, he phoned the police and reported the accident to them.

Officers attended his home address and carried out a breath test to detect alcohol. Waters registered 85 when the legal limit is 35, and he was subsequently arrested.

Jim Osborne, representing Waters, said his client had told the police everything and had initially stayed at the scene of the crash.

Mr Osborne said, since the crash, Waters had been banned from living at the pub "because the landlady thinks he is a liability".

He had moved in with the general manager of his workplace, where he works as a welder and steel fabricator, and gets a lift to work each day.

The court heard Waters had a previous conviction for drink driving, so he was given the mandatory three year ban.

He was fined £600, with £85 costs and a £240 surcharge.
