A 77-YEAR-OLD has been banned from driving for 25 months after drunkenly causing a crash.

Dennis Donovan, of Egerton Road, Bembridge, was nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit.

At the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday, he admitted drink driving on Lane End Road, Bembridge, on July 6. His breath alcohol reading was 101 when the legal limit is 35.

Liz Miller said police were called to the scene of a two-vehicle car crash.

Donovan was in the driver's seat of a Nissan Qashqai and admitted driving into the other vehicle and having been drinking alcohol.

Donovan, representing himself, told the court he "sincerely apologised for what happened".

Presiding magistrate Paul Gane said: "Drink driving is a very serious offence with consequences not just for you but for other people on the road."

Donovan was banned from driving for 25 months and was given a 12-month community order to include 100 hours of unpaid work.

He must pay £85 costs and a £114 surcharge.
