A WOMAN who was banned from driving has had her car seized and crushed after she illegally drove it.

Rachael Woods, 30, of Jubilee Close, Freshwater, admitted driving while disqualified and driving without insurance at Appley on July 15.

Her purple Toyota Aygo was seized by police and later crushed, prosecutor Liz Miller told the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court today (Friday).

(UPDATE August 16: Despite what was said in court, police have since said the car hasn't been crushed)

Miss Woods was spotted by police driving the uninsured car at Appley. When they stopped the driver, Woods, they discovered she had been banned from driving in November due to a drink drive conviction.

Jim Osborne, for Woods, said it was "quite a sad case" because Woods' mother had recently died, affecting her badly, and the car was the only thing left to her, except for some "knick-knacks".

Woods however was in the process of selling it, and was delivering it to the owner, who worked at Appley.

Mr Osborne said Woods had a young son to look after and would find it hard to get employment without a driving licence.

Magistrates handed Woods a 12-month community order to include 90 hours of unpaid work.

She must pay £85 costs, a £114 surcharge, and had six penalty points put on her licence.

She remains banned from driving.
