A SANDOWN man accused of causing his German Shephard dog suffering will stand trial later this year.
Elliott Hegarty, of Fitzroy Street, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates today (Tuesday).
The 36-year-old denied causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, on Fitzroy Street, Sandown, on March 18.
He also faced a charge of wilful obstruction of a highway, and using threatening, abusive, or insulting words/behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress, in Sandown, on the same day.
Prosecutor, Liz Miller, said police were called following reports of a man acting oddly, throwing bins and being violent toward a dog.
The dog has been removed from Mr Hegarty's care pending the court case.
The case was adjourned for a trial at the Isle of Wight Crown Court.
Mr Hegarty will next appear in court on September 12 for a pre-trial hearing.
Mr Hegarty was granted unconditional bail until that date.
UPDATE May 27, 2023: Mr Hegarty has been cleared
