A YACHT that lost its steering near the mouth of Beaulieu River today (Wednesday) was towed across the Solent by Cowes lifeboat.

The 7.7m yacht, with six people on board, became unmanageable because of the loss of a metal pin attached to the rudder.

The lifeboat, which began a routine Cowes Week exercise at 1.27pm, towed the yacht to the entrance of Cowes Harbour.

From there, a Cowes Harbour launch took over the task and delivered the boat to Shepards Marina.

The lifeboat returned to Cowes station at 4.15pm.
