A RYDE man caught driving while more than twice the drink-drive limit was banned from driving for three years after he clocked up his third drink-drive conviction.

Edward Betteley, of The Strand, admitted drink-driving on Wootton High Street, on July 9.

The 38-year-old, who is unemployed, was routinely pulled over by a police patrol at 4am, said Ann Smout, prosecuting, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court, on Monday.

After failing a roadside breath test, Betteley, provided a breath reading of 72 microgrammes at Newport Police Station. The legal drink-drive limit is 35.

For Betteley, Barry Arnett said his client was driving behind the police car when they decided to pull him over for a routine check.

Betteley had been at his partner's home and had been drinking earlier that evening, then went to bed.

"When he woke up, he had a cup of tea, felt fine and decided to drive home to Ryde, which was obviously an error on his part," said Mr Arnett.

When the offence happened, it had been "the worst week of his life", with serious issues affecting his teenage daughters, coupled with the death of his father, the court was told.

As well as the ban, Betteley was handed a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £48 surcharge.
