More than 80 people with disabilities took to the water at Royal Victoria Yacht Club's Open Day for People with Disabilities.

The Fishbourne club has been holding the event since 1981, which was the first International Year of Disabled Persons.

This year’s event saw guests take 230 individual boat trips, enjoyed a barbecue lunch, tea and cakes.

There were a variety of boats available to enjoy trips along Wootton Creek and out into The Solent.

Some ventured out on fast RIBs while wheelchair users were able to enjoy motor boating on Wet Wheels or sailing on Spirit of Scott Bader.

Sailing trips were also offered on two Drascombes and trimaran Mad Hatter while the club’s motor launch Victoria as well as Al Batross also offered more relaxed journeys.

Deputy Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight Mary Case, Island MP Bob Seely MP and IW Cllr Ian Dore went along to spend time with the guests.

Cllr Dore said: "The RVYC Disability sailing day is special as it represents something truly wholesome. It’s about improving the lives of others.

"My brother and I learnt to sail the RVYC with my parents assisting at Cadet Week, so the club has a lot of fond memories for me."

More than 60 club members volunteered, including our specialised boat crews, and the club thanked them for giving their time and boats free of charge.

Lunch and refreshments were provided by caterer Catertemp, club members provided home-made cakes for afternoon tea, and gifts for the tombola while Grace’s Bakery donated buns and cakes.

Other event supporers were Fishbourne Parish Council, the Daisie Rich Trust and Wightlink.

Next year’s event is planned for Saturday, July 8.
