The Brighstone and District Horticultural Society welcomed some new faces at its show, on Saturday, July 16, and one of them turned out to be a star of the Marvel movies franchise.

Among the onions, cucumber and rhubarb was none other than Hollywood A-Lister Benedict Cumberbatch, of Dr Strange and Sherlock fame (among a host of acting credits).

In an extraordinarily low-key social media post, the society shared a photo of the actor with Donald Appleby, its chairman.

Benedict, who also got married on the Isle of Wight, plays the protector of the earth in the Marvel films, so his presence at the local show was, perhaps, a fitting one.

Traditional entertainment, as well as best in show categories and displays, drew the crowds on Saturday morning.

The society posted: "It was great to see some new faces supporting our show.

"Our chairman Donald Appleby was there on Saturday morning, to welcome exhibitors in the tent."
