A MAN pulled from the water at Sandown beach has died.

Emergency service teams spent 40 minutes trying to save his life, on the beach on the hottest day of the year so far.

The man, a tourist in his 70s, was declared dead at the scene.

Ryde Beach Lifeguards confirmed the news. Their Sandown team was among those who tried to help the casualty.

He was unconscious and not breathing when pulled from the water, to the west of Sandown pier.

Also at the scene were paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, Coastguard rescue teams, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and the Isle of Wight Police.

Ryde Beach Lifeguards said: "We cannot thank everyone enough for the support and fantastic team work from all emergency services involved in the incident.

"Everyone worked seamlessly together, and gave their all to try and save the gentleman’s life, but it was not to be on this occasion sadly.

"Our sincerest condolences go out to the gentleman’s family and friends."

UPDATE: The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.
