Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely is backing Conservative Penny Mordaunt as new party leader and Prime Minister.

Mr Seely said this evening: "I'm delighted to be supporting my near neighbour Penny Mordaunt for Conservative  Leader and Prime Minister.

"She took Portsmouth North from Labour in 2010 and has since won it a further three times. This means Penny knows how to win to keep us in office.

"Penny has proved herself to be an effective minister, whilst also demonstrating public service as a Royal Naval Reservist. She'll get our party back on track.

"Penny knows the Isle of Wight and visited us in March. I hope to welcome Penny, as PM, back to the Island soon."

Previously, Mr Seely had long been a supporter of Boris Johnson.

He voted for him to stay in the recent vote of confidence but on July 6, said enough was enough, in light of further revelations, and joined calls for him to resign.
