Speaking just moments after the news broke, Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely has told Sky News he is 'not sure' what to say about the sacking of Michael Gove tonight (Wednesday), by under siege Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Mr Seely appeared on the tv news channel just a few minutes after welcoming the Commonwealth Games' Queen's Baton to Ryde.

It made a peaceful stop on the Isle of Wight - a world away from London turmoil, where, currently, 42 people have resigned from their government positions.

Meanwhile, Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove has been sacked by the PM.

Bob Seely told Sky News: "It's not a boring day in politics.

"I think this part of an endgame and I don't see any way out of it, apart from Boris stepping down in the coming days.

"I am really sorry it's come to this. We need to have a new leader, with a new government with a new agenda.

"People are not going to forgive us if we indulge in endless fighting amongst ourselves.

"The Chris Pincher affair has been the final straw for a lot of people."

Earlier, Mr Seely released a longer statement saying he no longer backed the PM, after sticking by him in recent months.

He also shared a letter her sent to the 1922 Committee, which is a senior group of Conservatives who make party decisions.

A change in rules to allow a new vote of confidence has not been ruled out and is expected early next week, but Mr Seely said: "I wonder, for the PM, if it would be better to go earlier.

"We need a new direction. We have important work to do internationally, nationally and on the Isle of Wight.

"We need to get back to governing and I am sure we can do that quickly."

Quoting Macbeth, he said the party had made up its mind and said the PM should step down asap, for the "sake of his reputation."
